Alfred Wainwright noted that ‘In Keld the sundial records the hours, but time is measured in centuries’ – acknowledging how time seems to slow down in Keld, providing the perfect environment for reflection, mindfulness and escape from the modern day stresses and demands.
Keld’s peaceful and beautiful surroundings provide an ideal environment for quiet contemplation, reflection and re-creation far away from the stresses and strains of city life.
In recognition of this, we created a beautiful outside space: the Keld Community Orchard.
The Keld Community Orchard was created on waste ground behind the Manse by a group of local residents. They sought advice on what species of fruit trees were most adapted to the harsh Pennine climate, people were invited to sponsor trees. Everyone is welcome to pick the harvests from the orchard – which includes apples, plums, gooseberries, blackcurrants, and rhubarb.
The orchard is maintained and cared for by a group of local volunteers

The Community Orchard has rustic seating that was made by a Keld resident so that people can spend time in this relaxing space.
The Community Orchard is open from dawn to dusk every day of the year, free of charge
Access is via the churchyard of Keld Chapel
The views looking down Kisdon Gorge and across to Kisdon Hill are spectacular
